Malaysian Archbishop to priests: ‘To be' is more important than ‘doing’

A Malaysian Archbishop reminded priests to become conscious of their “being” than “doing.”

Archbishop Julian Leow of Kuala Lumpur said thus while celebrating the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Kuala Lumpur on April 5.

In his homily, he said that a priest has many duties he is called to, but it is the journey of 'being' that is more meaningful and important.

During the International Theological Symposium on the Priesthood in February, Archbishop Julian emphasized the importance of nurturing the "four pillars of priestly life" that Pope Francis mentioned.

The four pillars are relationship with God, closeness to the bishop, fraternity with other priests, and closeness to the people.

“Our level of happiness is determined by the quality of our relationships. We need to pray for deepening and growing relationships with God and one another so that we can reflect God in our communities," said Archbishop Julian.

"The primary mission of each of us is to follow Christ, and only then can we become whatever God has called us to—a nun, priest, or layperson,” the prelate said.

He urged all to work together and build parishes and Archdiocese for the sake of the common good.

Archbishop Julian also expressed gratitude to priests serving tirelessly throughout the Archdiocese and appreciated their efforts, commitment, and sacrifice.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
