Malaysian dioceses prepare for 2026 pastoral convention

The four dioceses in Malaysia are now preparing to enter a new phase as they look forward to the Malaysia Pastoral Convention (MPC) in 2026.

The MPC focusing on Family, Church, Ecology, and Society will be the first event to see participation from all dioceses in Malaysia.

Each diocese spearheads preparatory events for the MPC to provide the faithful with proper catechesis and spiritual nourishment.

For instance, the Diocese of Malacca Johore has planned a two-stage. The first part was held at the vicariate levels in June, and the second part will be held at the diocesan level on October 14, 2023, at the MAJODI Center in Johor Bahru.

Inviting more than 300 delegates composed of active clergy, religious, and lay representatives, the assembly will be conducted within the framework of Synodality, celebrating the sense of communion and participation within the Malaysian Church.

“The Church will move towards a truly Malaysian Pastoral Convention or MPC in 2026. From now on, Sabah and Sarawak will also participate in the discussions and discernment,” said Malacca Mojore Bishop Bernard Paul in his opening address at the vicariate pastoral assemblies on June 5.

“An important pastoral thrust in our mission as Church in this diocese is to seek the Communion of Families,” he further explained. “The goal is so that we, as Church, build on the Communion of Families while seeking to be Creative, Inclusive, Bridge Building, Visionary and Missionary, and most importantly, to go forth as ‘disciples of Hope.’”

The prelate encourages each delegate to actively participate in the pastoral assembly of their diocese, as their pastoral response will be based on their communal discernment.

“We will conduct our discussions through the ‘spiritual conversation’ when silence and listening are an important part of the process,” he said. “This is so that we can sense the general movement of the Spirit. “In this way, what we do here can be something new that is relevant to the Church of the Diocese of Malacca Johore and is led by the Holy Spirit.” - Luke Godoy
