The Call of Nathanael
Tuesday, 21st Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Revelations 21:9-14 & John. 1: 45 – 51
Reflection Date: August 24, 2021
Here is a true Israelite in whom there is no guile (John 1:47).
What a tribute Jesus gives to Nathanael or Bartholomew. Jesus knows what man is (John. 2: 25). Nathanael, like all devout Jews, was looking forward to the coming of the Messiah.
Jesus adds, "There is no duplicity in him." How rare are people who are simple, honest, trustworthy, and true to their words? People who don't mind revealing their vulnerabilities. Jesus is happy to find such a person in Bartholomew, though he considers it necessary to make Bartholomew reconsider the belief that nothing good can come from Nazareth.
How blessed Bartholomew is. He promised, "You will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." Jesus is the point at which the prayers of people and the grace of God meet. And Jesus welcomed him into His company. The same is true of each of us who belongs to Christ. Can we be found worthy of being a person without guile?
When Jesus looks into our innermost selves, may He say that we are without duplicity?
