Around 70 delegates from 12 countries gathered in Tokyo from September 23 to 27, 2024, for the SIGNIS Asia Assembly (SAA 2024), centered on the theme “Human Communication in the Digital World for a Culture of Peace.”

Inspired by Pope Francis's message for World Communication Day, the event brought together members of SIGNIS Asia, a part of the World Catholic Association for Communication, to reflect on how digital communication can foster global harmony.

The assembly explored the profound influence of digital media on modern communication, with discussions emphasizing the responsibility to use these platforms ethically and wisely.

Delegates deliberated on the opportunities and risks posed by the digital age, acknowledging that while it can unite people across distances, it also brings the dangers of addiction, isolation, and the weakening of real human connections.

Participants expressed their commitment to promoting peace through digital communication, focusing on building bridges rather than walls. They acknowledged the need to collaborate with individuals and organizations that share the vision of using digital media to create a world of understanding and mutual respect.

The assembly also underscored the challenges presented by the digital revolution, urging a renewed focus on human-centred communication that fosters authentic relationships.

The delegates recognized the importance of integrating digital tools into daily life without losing the essence of human interaction, which lies in emotional, spiritual, and communal connections.

A key takeaway from the event was Pope Francis's call to cultivate wisdom in navigating the digital era. His message reminded the participants that true human communication must come from the heart, even in an AI-driven world.

This wisdom, he explained, is vital for promoting "fraternal responsibility" and combating what he termed "the globalization of indifference."

The assembly concluded with a shared resolve: to continue harnessing the power of digital media responsibly, and to engage younger generations in peace-building efforts, ensuring that the digital world remains a tool for fostering dialogue and unity.

In a time of rapid technological change, SIGNIS Asia delegates are committed to helping shape a future where human communication remains at the core of digital advancement, contributing to global peace and understanding.

SIGNIS Asia is the regional branch of SIGNIS, the World Catholic Association for Communication, an organization recognized by the Holy See that promotes the use of media for evangelization and social development.

It was formed in 2001 after the merger of UNDA (International Catholic Association for Radio and Television) and OCIC (International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audiovisual Media).

SIGNIS Asia specifically serves the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on empowering communicators across different Asian countries to use media for positive social impact, with a focus on Catholic values.

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
