Galle Diocese in Sri Lanka empowers low-income families

Caritas Galle launches CHARIS Singapore-funded project to uplift low-income families on April 6, 2025.

On April 6, the Caritas Social and Economic Development Center, the social service arm of the Galle diocese in Sri Lanka, launched a CHARIS Singapore-funded initiative to empower low-income families.

The Caritas Social and Economic Development Center began a special project funded by CHARIS Singapore to enhance the lives of low-income families in the parishes of the Diocese of Galle, under the patronage of Raymond Wickramasinghe, the bishop of the diocese.

A newly designed website depicting the humanitarian services rendered by the center was launched along with handing over scholarships to 60 students.

The scholarship is part of a direct cash transfer for the education of students who hail from low-income families. Once they are educated and employed, they could help financially their families and build up their better future.

Bishop Wickramasinghe and Caritas Social and Economic Development Center thanked CHARIS Singapore for their support and the generosity shown by all Singaporeans.

Caritas Social and Economic Development—Galle is a charitable organization dedicated to justice, peace, and human development in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.

The Diocesan Centre for Social and Economic Development works toward uplifting the needy, fostering harmony, and providing essential support in times of crisis.

Rooted in Gospel values and universal solidarity, Caritas Social and Economic Development strives to build a better world for all, regardless of religion or ethnicity.

CHARIS Singapore, also known as Caritas Humanitarian Aid and Relief Initiatives, is the umbrella body for overseas humanitarian aid and disaster relief efforts of the Archdiocese of Singapore.
