Another priest dies of COVID-19 in Myanmar
The vicar general of the Diocese Hpa An in Myanmar, Monsignor Martinus Myint Soe, died of COVID-19 on Friday, July 9.
He was the latest among members of the clergy in the country who died of the disease, including Fathers Florian Zam Khaw Kam, 48; Timothy Thang Do Cin, 52; and Monsigno Martin Suan Khan Mung.
The country’s Ministry of Health and Sports reported on Thursday 3,947 new cases of COVID-19, the highest daily total since the virus reached Myanmar.
Monsignor Martinus was born on Sept. 11, 1958, and was ordained priest on Nov. 20, 1988. He was rector of Hpa An Cathedral and its parish priest.
Several Catholic priests have contracted the coronavirus disease in Myanmar, with at least four priests in one diocese alone dying in just a week.
At least 20 of the 54 priests in the Diocese of Kalay in the country’s Sagaing region are currently suffering from symptoms of the disease — fever, cough, and colds. - Saw Hubert / RVA News
