Archbishop Kavin Randall, Apostolic Nuncio, visited a Catholic-run de-addiction center, the Bangladesh Rehabilitation and Assistance Center for Addicts (BARACA), on April 25.
The occasion was to recognize, appreciate, and award the staff of BARACA for their faithful service, said Holy Cross Brother Nirmal Francis Gomes, director.
“We were thrilled to have the presence of Archbishop Randall, Apostolic Nuncio to Bangladesh, said Gomes.
In his talk, Randall congratulated the director and the staff for their yeoman service to people dependent on drugs and working tirelessly for their healing and rehabilitation.
“It is a special feeling to be honored as recognition of work. Baraka's endless kindness and support have always been behind this achievement. I am eternally grateful to BARACA,” said Saiful Islam, an employee.
“The love, motivation, and support I have received will take you a long way to do better,” he added.
Holy Cross Brother Ronald Drahozal established BARACA in 1988, and it is the first drug treatment and rehabilitation center in the country.
BARACA is now a key initiative for Caritas Bangladesh, the social development wing of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Bangladesh.
In addition to offering drug treatment and rehabilitation services, the BARACA educates the public about drugs, harm and risk reduction, voluntary counseling and testing, and childcare and overnight shelters for at-risk street children.
At its four centers, BARACA has treated over 5,000 patients and provided shelter to over 1,500 street children throughout the years.
