Cardinals gathered for their fourth General Congregation on April 25, Friday morning, in the New Synod Hall, as the Church prepares to bid farewell to Pope Francis with the solemn funeral of “a shepherd, not a sovereign.”

Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, confirmed the presence of 149 cardinals at the meeting, which began with prayer at 9:10 AM and concluded by 12:20 PM. Thirty-three interventions were made, reflecting on the Church and the world in this time of mourning and transition.

The Apostolic Constitution of Universi Dominici Gregis was read through paragraph 32.

Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations, outlined details of the Pope’s funeral rites, emphasizing simplicity in line with Pope Francis' pastoral spirit. Notably, his body will not rest on a raised catafalque, symbolizing humility and closeness to the faithful.

The funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at 10:00 AM. Dignitaries—including the presidents of Argentina and Italy—will be seated according to diplomatic protocol. The full list of international delegations is expected later on Friday.

Following the Mass, the Pope’s body will be transported to the Basilica of St. Mary Major in a visible procession, starting from the Perugino Gate.

The interment will be a private act by the late Pope’s wishes.

On April 27, Sunday, the cardinals will visit St. Mary Major, pass through the Holy Door, pray at Pope Francis’ tomb, and conclude with Vespers before the icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani in the Pauline Chapel.

So far, an estimated 150,000 faithful have paid their respects at St. Peter’s Basilica. Doors were closed Friday at 7:00 PM, with entry ending at 6:00 PM. At 8:00 PM, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo, will preside over the Rite of Sealing the Coffin.
