Myanmar Salesians reach out to earthquake survivors in Mandalay

Salesians of Don Bosco and their volunteers have been reaching out to people affected by the recent earthquake in Myanmar with relief goods.

The 7.7 magnitude quake struck the country on March 28, 2025, claiming the lives of over 1,700 people, with thousands still missing.

The Sagaing Division, which borders Mandalay, was the epicenter of the earthquake.

“Don Bosco-Myanmar reached out to the suffering victims in Mandalay, sharing our quality time, drinks, and snacks with them after turning back from the Sagaing Bridge across the River Irrawaddy, since we were not allowed to proceed,” a Salesian missionary said.

“Only through mingling with them for some time did we learn that many other groups are providing rice boxes for all meals,” he added.

Mosquito nets, tarpaulins, umbrellas, mats, bed sheets, pillows, and other items are in short supply.

"We took the initiative to buy ice creams for the children and supply electric power by running a generator to charge their phones and lamps for the night." Normally, other groups do not take such initiatives. They share and leave immediately.

“We are pleased to observe that our presence among them has alleviated some of their worries,” a Salesian said.

Some Salesians visited earthquake survivors on March 30, sharing food and drinks, listening to their stories, and encouraging them to stay hopeful amid the calamity.

In Salesian communities, they offer prayers for people with holy mass, adoration, rosary, and personal devotions.

Many affected people are struggling to cope with their plight in the aftermath of the earthquake.

They said, "This is the first time they have free electricity to charge their phones and call family."
