Pope Francis on ventilator after respiratory Crisis, faithful gather in prayer at St. Peter’s Square

Pope Francis' health took a sudden downturn on February 28, 2025, after experiencing an isolated bronchospasm, prompting immediate medical intervention at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. 

The Holy See Press Office confirmed that the 88-year-old pontiff was placed on non-invasive mechanical ventilation following a severe respiratory episode that led to a brief but alarming deterioration in his condition.

According to the Vatican statement, Pope Francis, who had spent the morning alternating between respiratory physiotherapy and prayer in the hospital chapel, suffered an episode of vomiting, which caused him to inhale some of the contents. 

This led to an abrupt deterioration in his breathing, necessitating an urgent bronchial aspiration to clear his airways. 

The pope responded positively to the intervention, with his oxygen levels stabilizing after the ventilation was initiated.

Despite the severity of the crisis, the Vatican reassured the faithful that the pope has remained “alert and cooperative” throughout the ordeal. However, his “prognosis remains guarded,” and doctors require 24 to 48 hours to assess his recovery from this latest complication.

Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, after a respiratory tract infection progressed into bilateral pneumonia. 

Over the past two weeks, he has faced multiple health challenges, including an asthma-like breathing crisis and mild kidney insufficiency, which has since improved. 

Despite these difficulties, he has continued to follow his spiritual routines, receive the Eucharist, and oversee Vatican affairs from his hospital suite. 

Given his delicate condition, the Vatican canceled the Jubilee Audience originally scheduled for March 1, 2025.

As news of the pope’s worsening condition spread, hundreds of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pray the Rosary of the fifth night for his recovery.

Pilgrims, religious communities, and Vatican staff joined in silent prayer, lighting candles, and reciting petitions for the Holy Father’s healing. 

The rosary vigils, which began in the early evening, have drawn Catholics from around the world, reflecting deep concern and solidarity with the pope in this critical moment.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers, saying, “The Holy Father feels the love and support of the faithful. Let us continue to entrust him to the Lord, praying for his strength and healing.”

As the world watches and waits for further updates, Pope Francis' unwavering faith and resilience remain at the heart of the Church’s collective prayers. 

The next 48 hours will be crucial in determining his path to recovery.
