Commitment to Follow Jesus
July 1, Monday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: Amos 2:6-10, 13-16; Matthew 8:18-22
Today’s Gospel recounts the stories of two individuals who express a desire to follow Jesus. The first man boldly declares that he will follow Jesus wherever He goes. In response, Jesus cautions him that following Him requires deep commitment and sacrifice.
The second man requests permission to bury his father before following Jesus, but Jesus tells him to let the dead bury their own dead, urging him to go and proclaim the Kingdom of God.
These interactions serve as powerful reminders for the faithful: following Jesus necessitates prioritizing our relationship with Him above all else. It demands that we are willing to make sacrifices and let go of anything that holds us back from fully committing to Him.
We all face similar challenges in our lives. We might be tempted to place other things ahead of our relationship with Jesus or find excuses for why we can’t fully commit to Him. Yet, Jesus calls us to let go of these distractions and follow Him wholeheartedly.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: How truly committed are we to following Jesus? Let us pray for the grace to follow Jesus with renewed commitment and dedication. May we have the courage to let go of anything that hinders our relationship with Him and embrace the challenges and sacrifices that come with being His disciples.
May God bless our journey of faith. Amen.
