South Korea: Pope names new archbishop of Gwangju
Pope Francis has named Msgr. Simon Ok Hyun-jin, Archbishop of Gwangju (South Korea).
He was currently titular bishop of Pederodiana and auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Gwangju.
On November 19, Pope Francis accepted the resignation Archbishop Hyginus Hee-joong Kim from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese.
Bishop Simon Ok Hyun-jin was born on March 5, 1968, in Muan, in the Archdiocese of Gwangju.
On January 26, 1994, he was ordained as a priest. He was elected titular bishop of Pederodiana and auxiliary of the archdiocese of Gwangju on May 12, 2011, and consecrated on July 6 of the same year.
Within the Korean Bishops' Conference, he was president of the Committee for Immigrants and Foreign Residents in Korea.
He is a member of the Committees for the Doctrine of the Faith and for Social Affairs, and, since 2018; he has been president of the Committee for Social Communication.
