Hong Kong Bishop ordains 8 new permanent deacons
Jesuit Bishop Stephen Chow Sau Yan of Hong Kong Diocese ordained eight new permanent deacons at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, Caine Road, on the Immaculate Heart of Mary, June 17.
The new permanent deacons are Gamaliel Cheng, Paul Lui, Thomas Lam, Vincent Chan, Paul Wat, Francis Tang, Stephen Yau, and Patrick Leung.
"The principal function of the deacon, therefore, is to collaborate with the bishop and the priests in the exercise of a ministry which is not of their wisdom but of the Word of God, calling all to conversion and holiness," according to the Congregation for the Clergy, Directory for the Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons, no. 23.
Unlike in most Western countries, permanent deacons in Asia are uncommon. According to sources, a few countries in Asia have permanent deacons, such as India and Hong Kong, among others. – Santosh Digal
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
