The Diocese of Hong Kong has created a preparatory committee for the upcoming celebration of its 80th anniversary in 2026.

In a chancery notice dated July 29, Cardinal Stephen Chow, Bishop of Hong Kong, has appointed Auxiliary Bishop Ha Chi-shing as the committee’s chairperson.

Joining the prelate are 16 members consisting of priests, religious, and lay persons.

They will function from August 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026.

The committee is also tasked to handle the preparations for the Ordinary Jubilee in 2025.

Located in the Guangdong Province in Southeast China, Hong Kong is one of the largest dioceses in the world. It was canonically erected on April 11, 1946.

Enrico Pascal Valtorta served as its first diocesan bishop from 1946 to 1951.

Catholics compose 8% of the Hong Kong’s total population as per 2021 data, or around 621,000 individuals.

Alongside the creation of this preparatory committee is Cardinal Chow’s establishment of the Diocesan Commission for the Ministry of Catechist, with Fr. Joseph Chan and Ms. Connie Ching To-hing appointed as ex-officio members.

Furthermore, Cardinal Chow announced that he will personally handle the applications of diocesan priests for further studies starting in September, a responsibility originally handled by one of his vicar generals.
