Pope appoints Ha Noi’s judicial vicar as archdiocese’s new auxiliary bishop
Pope Francis has chosen Father Joseph Vu Cong Vien, judicial vicar of the Archdiocese of Ha Noi in Vietnam, as the new auxiliary bishop of the same diocese.
The announcement was made public on October 26.
Alongside the episcopate status, he was also assigned the titular see of Zama major.
Auxiliary bishop-elect Vu was born in Tan Do in the Archdiocese of Ha Noi on March 23, 1973. He studied philosophy and theology at Saint Joseph’s Major Seminary of Ha Noi.
He was ordained a priest on December 20, 2007, and was first assigned as parish vicar of Binh Cach from 2008 to 2010.
Auxiliary bishop-elect Vu went on to serve as parish priest of Nam Dy (2015-2020) and Ke Set (202-2021). He was awarded a licentiate in canon law from Saint Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada (2010-2014).
Aside from being the archdiocese’s judicial vicar, a position he has held since 2014, he also serves as the academic dean of Saint Joseph’s Major Seminary since 2011.
As of 2016, the total population in the Archdiocese of Ha Noi is around 8.6 million, according to data from UCA News.
