Myanmar: Former bishop of Mawlamyine diocese dies at 76

Bishop Raymond Saw Po Ray

A former bishop of Mawlamyine diocese in Myanmar died on January 6, 2025. He was 76.

Bishop emeritus Raymond Saw Po Ray was born on August 11, 1948, He was ordained priest on April 13, 1975.

He was ordained bishop on December 8, 1987, at Thagyet village, Myeik Parish.

Pope John Paul II appointed him as auxiliary bishop of Yangon on July 3, 1987.

On March 22, 1993, he was named the Bishop of Mawlamyine.  

He retired from his episcopate on May 31, 2023, upon reaching his 75 age.

He was a priest for 49.73 years and a bishop for 37 years.

Before he became a prelate, he was the parish priest of Hpa-an from 1975 to 1976.

He was Rector of St. Joseph Minor Seminary, Pago, from 1976 to 1979. 

He studied at St. Joseph Seminary, New York from 1979 to 1982.

Upon returning to Myanmar, he taught Moral Theology at St. Joseph Catholic Major Seminary, Yangon from 1982-1987.

Under his leadership, he carried out several pastoral projects and worked hard for the faith formation of people together with priests, nuns, catechists, and lay people.
