India: World Youth Day enriched an Indian priest’s life, ministry

The 17th World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon, Portugal was a grace-filled religious experience for an Indian priest.

"Life is full of memories. Some are to be cherished for life. Attending a World Youth Day is a life-satisfying moment," said Father Arputharaj Asir from the Archdiocese of Pondicherry-Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, south India.

Meeting young people across the globe, praying, meditating, and listening to the words of the Holy Father is like a dream come true moment, he added.

It is the experience of Father Arputharaj, who had already participated in the WYD held in Panama, Central America, in 2019.

The World Youth Day in Lisbon was held from August 1 to 6, 2023, with the theme "Mary arose and went with haste."

Some 24 South Indian delegates (Tamil Nadu) participated in WYD. They were given a warm welcome with dance and music by the people of Lisbon (Constancia Pariah).

"I was once again so privileged to participate in WYD. It was a memorable moment for me," the priest said.

According to him, WYD has been full of joy and grace-filled events. It was a wonderful opportunity for him to have personal contact with Pope Francis, a chance to strengthen his faith in God, and a chance for him to make friends with people from different countries.

"The occasion enabled me to learn how to live harmoniously with others in a universal church," says Father Arputharaj, former youth director of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry-Cuddalore.

Those days were filled with a lot of emotions, along with the Pope and about 15,00,000 young pilgrims from more than 160 countries, 10,000 priests, and 600 bishops from all over the world.

"It made us forget the fatigue of our long journey. The love and hospitality of the people of Lisbon and the host families have made me understand the fraternity and solidarity of the people of God," Father Arputharaj said.

The people in Portugal were hospitable and generous. They were proud of their culture and traditions, especially their music.

They were there for five days, which were intensive. Many programs and activities started with the inaugural Mass with Pope Francis, the Day of Forgiveness, the youth festival, the vocational fair, the faith walk, the Way of the Cross, the vigil service, exhibitions, discussions, the cultural program of each country, and Holy Mass.

"The whole program was interesting and inspiring. I was overwhelmed and grace-filled with moments," Father Arputharaj said. "I thank God for this opportunity to meet people from different cultures and countries."

"This experience enriched my ministry in guiding the youth in my archdiocese," he added. - Robancy A. Helen
