India: Salesian FM community radio station wins National Award for Entertainment and Development Excellence

An Indian Salesian FM community radio station won the National Award for Entertainment and Development Excellence on July 1.

The Green Maple Foundation’s Green Feather Awards 2023: National Award for Entertainment and Development Excellence was conferred to Radio Salesian 90.8 FM, along with awards for Industry giants under various categories of Environmental Management, Environmental Protection, Safety standards, women's empowerment, human resources excellence, corporate social responsibility excellence, energy conservation, research, and singing.

The event occurred at Istana Resort, 1 Lal Kothi Road, Darjeeling, a municipality in the northernmost region of the Indian state of West Bengal.

"This award has come to us solely due to the sincere efforts of Radio Salesian RJs both past and present. Cheers to team Radio Salesian," said Salesian Father C. M. Paul, director of the radio station and media teacher.

Radio Salesian was established in 2016 as the first college-based community radio station in North Bengal and the entire northeast of India. It operates out of the 85-year-old Salesian College in Sonada, Darjeeling.

Salesian College Sonada Darjeeling, a Don Bosco institution founded in 1938, runs the community radio. This is the first college affiliated with the University of North Bengal.

On October 28, 2016, the Salesian College Sonada web radio went live as a Diwali gift to Nepalis everywhere.

Back in June 2012, Salesian College Sonada Principal Dr. George Thadathil and his team started the procedure to get the radio station a wireless operating license.

On December 8, 2016, Radio Salesian 90.8 FM officially began broadcasting after receiving the necessary authorization for wireless operation.

Live broadcasts from Radio Salesian 90.8 FM can be heard in various locations, including Kurseong, Mirik, Salugora, Sonada, Sukna, Pashupati (Nepal), Sukiapukuri, Balsun Valley, and others. -Santosh Digal

 

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ.
