India Promotes Ecumenical Spirit Through the Week of Christian Unity
The Commission for Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue of Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council (TNBC) organized the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity rally to promote unity and diversity on January 18, 2025, at Christ Hall Seminary, Karumathur, south India.
The program commenced with a procession from Arul Anandar College, Tamil Nadu to Christ Hall Seminary, Karumathur.
Father Paul Britto, director of the Nobili Pastoral Center, Archdiocese of Madurai, explained the purpose of the gathering and the prayer service in the context of the Week of Christian Unity.
The event witnessed the participation of seminarians, seminary staff, candidates, pastors, priests, nuns, professors, superiors, and rectors.
Around 250 participants from six Christian denominations attended, showcasing a spirit of ecumenical unity.
Father J. Benedict Barnabas, regional secretary of TNBC for Ecumenism and Dialogue, said, “Unity in diversity is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, and gatherings like this strengthen our shared mission.”
Father Paul Britto remarked, “Let this ecumenical spirit inspire us to work together for peace and harmony in our communities.”
Father Peter Amaladoss, professor at Christ Hall Seminary, Karumathur, spoke on the historical development of the Christian Unity Octave since 325 AD.
Pastor Christy, a professor at Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary (TTS), led a meaningful reconciliation service.
Pastor Gnanavaram, former Principal of TTS, delivered a homily on the importance of Christian unity and its relevance today.
Father Gaspar Raja, President of the Catholic Religious of India (CRI), shared an inspiring message on the love of Christ on the cross, emphasizing it as the central point uniting all Christians.
Father Barnabas proposed the vote of thanks, Father A. Susai Selvaraj, Rector of Christ Hall Seminary, honored the heads of different Christian denominations with shawls, and Father. S. Aruldoss concluded the program with a thanksgiving prayer and final blessings.
The seminarians of Christ Hall Seminary and Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary led the gathering in singing hymns.
