Filipino archbishop calls for nationwide solidarity with persecuted Christians on Red Wednesday

Capiz Archbishop Victor Bendico, leading the faithful in the Western Visayas region, has issued a heartfelt call to action, urging Catholics across the Philippines to join the annual Red Wednesday campaign on November 27.

This observance, an international initiative by Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) to honor persecuted Christians worldwide, will be marked by prayer, unity, and striking visual tributes across the nation.

In his message, Archbishop Bendico emphasized that Red Wednesday is more than a day of remembrance; it is a moment to stand in solidarity with Christians who face severe oppression for their faith.

"Through this commemoration, we are called to deepen our compassion for those bearing the cross of persecution and to strengthen our own faith in the face of trials," he shared.

The Archbishop has encouraged parishes, mission stations, Catholic schools, and religious communities in his diocese to actively participate in the observance, promoting a spirit of unity and empathy.

ACN Philippines has chosen the theme “One in Suffering, One in Consolation,” inspired by the recent Synod on Synodality.

This theme emphasizes collective resilience and compassion, particularly in challenging times. “In this challenging time, may Red Wednesday remind us that no believer stands alone. United as one Body in Christ, we stand with our suffering brothers and sisters in prayer and action,” Archbishop Bendico added, underscoring the day’s significance in bridging communities across the Philippines and beyond.

To signify solidarity with persecuted Christians, the Archbishop has directed all parishes, chapels, and church institutions within the archdiocese to illuminate their facades in red, symbolizing the blood and resilience of Christian martyrs.

Parishioners are encouraged to wear red garments and participate in community prayers, processions, and masses dedicated to the cause.

The Capiz Archdiocese will hold its main observance with a Holy Mass for persecuted Christians, led by Archbishop Bendico himself, at 5:00 PM in the Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral.

While Capiz will hold its own moving tribute, the main national celebration will take place at the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag, led by ACN Philippines President Archbishop Socrates Villegas.

This event will begin at 4:00 PM with the recitation of the Holy Rosary, followed by a Holy Mass and a solemn candle-lighting ceremony.

Churches, schools, and religious communities nationwide will illuminate their facades in red, sending a powerful message of support and remembrance for Christians enduring hardships worldwide.

In addition to prayer and remembrance, the archdiocese has announced special collections during the observance to support ACN Philippines' projects for persecuted Christian communities.

The funds raised will go toward aid initiatives, including providing resources and pastoral care to regions suffering from religious oppression.

The Red Wednesday campaign, which originated in 2016, has seen participation grow each year, spreading across continents.

By illuminating church facades and organizing events in support of persecuted Christians, the campaign hopes to bring greater awareness to global religious oppression and to inspire collective action and empathy.

As Filipino Catholics join this movement, they become part of a worldwide call for peace, solidarity, and the protection of religious freedoms.

For Filipino Catholics, Red Wednesday stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless Christians throughout history.

The annual observance reaffirms their commitment to a global Church and inspires unity in the face of adversity.
