On August 28, Pakistan Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif appointed Sr. Genevieve Ram Lal (Mariam Parveen) as a member of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) for a three-year term.

Sr. Genevieve’s nomination, put forward by Saiban-e-Pakistan—an initiative of Paigham-e-Pakistan and the Centre for Peace, Reconciliation, and Reconstruction Studies—marks a significant milestone for the Catholic Church’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and empower women in Pakistan.

Her extensive experience and dedication to social justice are expected to greatly contribute to the NCSW’s mission of advancing women’s rights.

At 66 years old, Sr. Genevieve, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary, has been a prominent figure in Pakistan’s Catholic community.

She has served as the National Director of the Catholic Women's Organization since 2012, leading initiatives that support the education, empowerment, and welfare of women across the country.

The Catholic Church in Pakistan has warmly congratulated Sr. Genevieve on her appointment, expressing confidence in her ability to bring valuable insights and leadership to the NCSW.

Her appointment is seen as a testament to her unwavering commitment to advocating for women's rights within both the religious and broader national context.

The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) was established in July 2000 as a statutory body, reflecting Pakistan’s dedication to fulfilling its national and international obligations, including the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995) and the National Plan of Action for Women (1998).

The NCSW plays a pivotal role in shaping policies and legislation that promote gender equality and protect the rights of women across the nation.

RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
