Public Viewing of Pope Francis Begins April 23

The Holy See’s Office for Liturgical Celebrations has announced that the coffin of the late Pope Francis will be solemnly transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. Vatican time.
The ceremony will begin with a moment of prayer at the Chapel of the Domus Sanctae Marthae, presided over by Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church.
Following the prayer, the procession will pass through Piazza Santa Marta and Piazza dei Protomartiri Romani, before entering St. Peter’s Square via the Arco delle Campane, and proceeding through the central doors into the Vatican Basilica.
At the Altar of the Confessio, Cardinal Farrell will lead the Liturgy of the Word, after which the public visitation to the body of Pope Francis will officially begin.

Patriarchs and Cardinals are to arrive in choral habit at the Chapel of Domus Sanctae Marthae by 8:45 a.m.

Archbishops, Bishops, Canons of the Vatican Chapter, Vatican Ordinary Minor Penitents, and members of the Papal Chapel, as per the Motu Proprio “Pontificalis Domus,” must be present in Piazza Santa Marta by 8:30 a.m. dressed in their proper choral habit.
This solemn event marks the beginning of the official funeral rites as outlined in the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis.
