Surrender ourselves to God

December 24, The Fourth Advent Sunday
Daily Readings: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Romans 16:25-27; Luke 1:26-38

The Fourth Sunday of Advent calls for an immediate preparation to receive Jesus, the Son of God into our life and life situations. The spirit of the liturgy is summarised in the words of our Blessed Mother in Luke 1:38, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word”. There is a call to do the will of God by surrendering oneself to Him and give God His due place in our lives.

King David was one of God’s favourites. The author of the First Book of Samuel in 13:1 and the author of the Acts of the Apostles in 13:22 call him a man after God’s own heart. Yet, David placed himself and his need before thinking of a Temple for God. Yes indeed! He built a house for himself without constructing a Temple. Yet God assured David His steadfast love and fidelity. He guaranteed endurance and success to Davidic dynasty. To the one failed to build Him a temple, God built a house in the sense of a dynasty. Yes! God never abandoned him. David’s story can be our own story many times.

Mary our Blessed Mother on the other hand shines as an exemplar and a paradigm of seeking and doing God’s will as we meditate upon the event of Annunciation in the Gospel Reading of today. She is a singular model for Christian discipleship as she took the road less travelled. We are called to tread the path she chose to travel. But then we need to rely on God, surrender ourselves to Him alone and discover our vocation to bring Jesus into the world.
