Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Daily Readings: Revelation 11:19A; 12:1-6A, 10AB; 1 Corinthians 15:20-27; Luke 1:39-56
The book of Revelation describes the temple of God opening in heaven, revealing the ark of the covenant. St. Paul, in his letter, speaks of the resurrection of the dead, affirming that just as Christ was raised, so will we be on the last day.
The heart of the gospel is Mary’s song of praise: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,” expressing her joy in God’s love and faithfulness.
Celebrating the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we commemorate the dogma that Mary was assumed into heaven bodily at the end of her earthly life.
This feast reminds us that we too will one day be assumed into heaven, experiencing eternal life and victory over sin and death.
Mary's initial hesitation transformed into trust in God’s help, with Elizabeth’s reassurance. Witnessing God’s work in others encourages us to trust Him more.
Unique role as a true disciple of Jesus makes her the first to receive the promise and blessing of being taken up to heaven, and we celebrate her for this.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: God’s love for humanity and our ultimate destiny in heaven are revealed through the Assumption. Celebrating Mary’s role in salvation history and her continued intercession.
Let us be grateful for her example of faithfulness and obedience to God, and the gift of eternal life that awaits us all. Amen.
