Recognizing the True God
June 12, Wednesday of the Tenth Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: 1 Kings 18:20-39; Matthew 5:17-19
In the first reading, Elijah challenged the people who worshiped Baal to bring fire to a bull prepared on an altar. Despite their efforts, nothing happened. When Elijah's turn came, he soaked the altar with water and prayed to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel.
The Lord’s fire consumed the offering, wood, stones, and water. The people then recognized that the Lord was the true God.
In today's Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples that He has come not to abolish the law but to fulfill it. He explains that anyone who breaks even the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. Conversely, those who obey and teach these commandments will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Both readings remind us of who the True God is. The first reading demonstrates God's power, showing that He can bring down fire to prove His divinity. Similarly, in the Gospel, Jesus reminds us to abide by God's commandments.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: Abiding by God's commandments is challenging. A person must possess firm faith to resist the temptations of the evil spirit. We are called to follow the commandments given by our True God.
Lord, help us to obey Your commandments at all times. Amen.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
