Being Chosen
May 14, Feast of Saint Matthias, Apostle
Daily Readings: Acts 1:15-17, 20-26; John 15:9-17
Today we celebrate the feast of St. Matthias, the Apostle. Jesus' disciples chose Saint Matthias to replace Judas as the twelfth apostle.
In the first reading, the disciple chose to replace Judas, who betrayed Jesus. Jesus chose Matthias as one of the eleven to participate in his ministry.
The Gospel shows the selfless love of Jesus for his disciples. He said, "As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you." Abide in my love.” He further explained, "You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and I have appointed you, that you should go, and you should bring forth fruit, and your fruit should remain."
God is the source and author of life, regardless of the position or possessions we hold. God is both the source and author of life. As the owner of this life, he has full control of it. It is important to value whatever we have because it is a gift from God.
Our work, positions, and missions are all part of God's plans. God chooses his beloved people to put them in a position where they can be functional. We need to be productive, as God commissions us to do his mission.
Call to Action for Catholic Living: Accepting responsibility is both an honor and a privilege. Many are called but few are chosen. We value and strive to merit the tasks assigned to us.
Lord, help us to be faithful to you as you choose us among your people to fulfill your mission. Amen.
