“Are there any exceptions?”
July 28, Friday of 16th Week in Ordinary Time
Daily Readings: First reading: Exodus 20:1–17; Gospel: Matthew 13:8–23
In my experience, a request for an exception is made within a fraction of a second of the issuance of instructions. Some individuals who request an exception to the rule or an explanation have a solid, legitimate reason.
Some people will merely say yes after reading the instructions, but you will never see them actually complying. Other individuals silently and without exception comply with the instructions.
These individuals are genuinely awe-inspiring, as it is extremely uncommon for people to adhere to instructions today.
In the first reading of Exodus, we can see how the commandments were given to Moses. These commandments would be the daily basis of the religious faith of the Israelites. However, many times they disobey the ten commandments.
In the gospel today, Jesus is talking about the different types of people who hear the word and how they practice it in their daily lives.
Let us examine ourselves: how faithful followers of Christ are we? Are we faithful? Or did we land on fertile ground, as opposed to being one of the seeds in the parable with weak roots and choked by thorns? Do we still make excuses for the sins that we commit?
This is an invitation for us today: can we follow religiously the teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ? Can we follow without any exceptions?
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
