Vatican approves establishment of St. John Vianney School of Theology in Mindanao
The Dicastery for Culture and Education, Vatican, permitted the establishment of a new school of theology in Mindanao, Southern Philippines.
In a decree dated May 19, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, has approved the establishment of St. John Vianney School of Theology (SJVST), Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines, as an Ecclesiastical Higher Educational Institution of the Holy See, with a canonical public juridic personality under Church law.
SJVST is also known as St. John Vianney Theological Seminary of the CABUSTAM dioceses of Mindanao: Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Surigao, Tandag, and Malaybalay.
By doing this, the Prefect also approved the Statutes of SJVST and its affiliation with Loyola School of Theology (LST) in Manila for five years, as required by the Instruction on the Affiliation of Institutes of Higher Studies (Article 17; Paragraph 10; Article 10; Paragraph 2;).
Through this affiliation, students of SJVTS who complete their theological program are granted the ecclesiastical degree, Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology (STB), by LST.
The Jesuit-run LST, which is located at the Ateneo de Manila University, is one of the seven theology faculties in English that the Society of Jesus oversees worldwide.
LST was started in 1965 to offer theological education to students at San Jose Seminary, Society of Jesus seminarians, and students from many other religious congregations. -Santosh Digal
