Thailand group helps internally displaced people in Myanmar
An independent association in Thailand has started soliciting funds from individuals across southeast countries and abroad to help internally displaced people in Myanmar.
The Spring Revolutionary Interfaith Network (SRIN) based in Thailand has taken the initiative to gather goods and monetary support so that refugees in Myanmar can be helped, Father Dominic Htwe, a member of SRIN, told RVA News.
SRIN is based at Maesot in North West of Thailand.
It is an interfaith group comprising Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and irreligious who raised the donation.
“Most of the funds were collected from Catholics, especially from the Catholics I know from different countries,” Father Dominic said.
“We started forming our SRIN on August 8, 2021, with different religions including those without any religions,” he added.
SRIN is formed by religious and political leaders and activists. Currently, it has 16 members.
When asked why SRIN is seeking donations for people in Myanmar, Father Demonic said that due to the political situation in Myanmar, the civilians become refugees, who need humanitarian assistance.
SRIN has already sent aid four times to Myanmar.
On May 22, the latest donation was sent, including clothes, food, blankets, and other essential commodities.
On behalf of SRIN, Father Dominic thanked all the donors who donated to the refugees in Myanmar.
“We thank our generous supporters for their trust in us,” Father Dominic said.
The military junta seized power in Myanmar in the February coup last year. In the aftermath, the displacement numbers reached a record high, according to a joint report by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
