Pope Francis expressed his sorrow at the death of former President Fidel Valdez Ramos, the 12th president of the Philippines.

In a message to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, the pope extended his "heartfelt condolences to Filipinos" and assured them of his prayers.

"Mindful of the late President’s years of service to the nation and his efforts in fostering the values of democracy, peace, and rule of law, I commend his soul to the mercy of Almighty God," the pope wrote.

Pope Francis prayed for the consolation of former President Ramos’ family and all who lament Ramos’ passing.

Ramos died on July 31 at the age of 94 and was laid to rest at the National Heroes Cemetery in Metro Manila on August 9.

Before his presidency, he served as Secretary of National Defense from 1988 to 1991.

The Global Leadership Foundation reported that the nation experienced political stability and a growing economy under Ramos’ presidency from 1992 to 1996.

He could promote and foster national reconciliation and unity, especially with Muslim separatists, communist insurgents, and military rebels.

He founded the Ramos Peace and Development Foundation to promote peace and prosperity in the Philippines and the greater Asia-Pacific region. - With inputs from CBCP News

RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
