India: Syro-Malabar Global Mission Quiz Winners Declared

Winners of the Global Syro-Malabar Mission Quest 2022

Global Winners of the Syro-Malabar Mission Quest, an online quiz competition on the mission, was declared on January 11.

The announcement was made at Mount St. Thomas, Kochi, the Major Archiepiscopal Curia (the central office) of the Syro-Malabar Church, in the presence of the bishops assembled in Synod.

In the Sunday School Students' category, Santina Sijo of Changanassery Archdiocese won the first position; Agasa Benny of Kothamangalam Diocese won the second position; and Joel Jojo of Ujjain Diocese won the third position.

In the Seniors category, Sophie Joseph of Ernakulam-Angamaly Major Archdiocese won first place, Roshina Joseph of Changanassery Archdiocese the second place and Pinto Davis Akkara of Chicago Diocese third place.

Cardinal George Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, handed over the Cash prizes and the certificates of appreciation for the winners to the bishops of the respective dioceses of the winners.

The Cardinal stated that it is commendable that Mission Quest has been able to bring Syro-Malabar scholars and faithful from around the world together on the same platform for ecclesiastical studies.

The winners were chosen from over 10,000 participants from the 35 Syro-Malabar Dioceses worldwide.

The quiz was conducted online on November 20 in five languages and five time zones so that the faithful across time zones and languages could participate.

The Mission Office Secretary Father Siju Azhakath told that the goal of the quiz program was to deepen the knowledge of the Church and to create missionary awareness in the hearts of the Syro-Malabar faithful.

The quiz involved a two-month-long learning process with question banks provided in Malayalam, English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

The topics of the year’s quiz included the Gospel of Matthew, St. Thomas the Apostle of India, Deva Sahayam Pillai, the first Indian lay saint along with general questions on the Syro-Malabar Church and its missions.

Mission Quiz was organized by the Syro-Malabar Mission office (SyMM) in association with the Commission for Catechesis, with the collaboration of the Diocesan directors of Catechism.

Faith Formation Commission Secretary Fr Thomas Melvettath, Mission Office Secretary Fr Siju Azhakath, Sister Marilyn George, C Jinsi Chacko and Diocesan Catechism Commission Secretaries led the project.

The Syro-Malabar Church is the second largest Eastern Catholic Church with over 5 million faithful worldwide.  This Church has 5 Metropolitan archdioceses and 26 dioceses in India, and 4 dioceses and 1 Apostolic visitation outside India.
