India: Former bishop of Udaipur passes away at 85

A retired bishop of the western Indian state of Rajasthan died on April 14, 2022. He was 85.

Joseph Pathalil, Bishop Emeritus of Udaipur passed away at noon at Paras KJ Hospital, Udaipur, Rajasthan. 

Funeral details are awaited, says a report from Father Stephen Alathara, deputy secretary general, Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI).

Bishop Pathalil hails from the Kottayam district of Kerala and was born on January 26, 1937. 

He was ordained a priest for the diocese of Ajmer on September 21, 1963. As a good pastor, he worked in three different mission stations namely three years in Maska Mahuri as assistant parish priest and six years in Ambapara as parish priest, and 12 years in Holy Spirit Church, Dungarpur. 

He was appointed as the first bishop of the newly erected diocese of Udaipur on December 3, 1984, and ordained Bishop on February 14, 1984. 

He led the diocese to its glory for 27 years and resigned from the active episcopal ministry on December 21, 2012. 

He is a priest for 58 years and a bishop for 37 years.
