Vatican official: Synodality thrives through ‘heart-to-heart’ relationships
A Vatican official emphasized the significance of "heart-to-heart relationships" in bringing Synodality to life within the Church and beyond.
Reflecting on Dilexit Nos, Pope Francis' latest encyclical on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle noted that true Church renewal can only happen when each member of the faithful embodies trust, obedience, and humility before God.
“Missionary synodality requires a heart-to-heart relationship between pastors and the faithful, and among local churches, where each heart is purified of prejudice and self-promotional pride, allowing for empathetic listening,” said Cardinal Tagle, Pro-Prefect for the Dicastery for Evangelization, in an interview with Vatican News.
Cardinal Tagle encouraged the faithful to deepen their understanding of the heart, not through abstract concepts, but by "listening to hearts that have found true life in the loving Heart of Jesus.”
“The Heart of Jesus is a missionary heart, bringing God’s boundless love through a human heart to all people, to every situation, and to all creation,” he explained.
The prelate further noted that the Holy Father’s reflections in Dilexit Nos resonate not only with the recently concluded Synod of Bishops but also with the upcoming Jubilee Year in 2025.
"Dilexit Nos serves as a vital spiritual and missionary resource for this Jubilee, preparing us all to become pilgrims who share Jesus' love with others—a love that frees hearts from fear, pride, selfishness, indifference, vengeance, and despair. He loves us, and so we have hope,” the cardinal shared.
Cardinal Tagle echoed Pope Francis' call for each person to embrace Jesus' love within their hearts and extend it to others and society as a whole.
“The merciful love of the Heart of Jesus offers hope to a fractured world, especially to those who feel beyond redemption,” he said.
Dilexit Nos is Pope Francis' fourth encyclical. Unlike his previous social encyclicals, Fratelli Tutti and Laudato Si’, this encyclical centers on spirituality.
“I encourage us to revisit these social encyclicals to uncover traces or seeds of Dilexit Nos already present within them,” Cardinal Tagle suggested.
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
