Signis India hosts webinar on cyber security and digital wellness
On December 16, 2024, Signis India organized a webinar on the theme "Cyber Sapiens: Cyber Security and Wellness Strategies for a Balanced Online Life."
The event saw the participation of over 110 attendees.
Father Jenith Sekar, General Manager of the Technical Department at Madha TV, Tamil Nadu, served as the resource person for the session.
He highlighted the pope’s message about the “Road to Jericho,” emphasizing the need for compassion and vigilance in addressing vulnerabilities in the digital world.
He urged everyone to act as Good Samaritans, protecting themselves and others from the perils of cyberspace.
During his presentation, Fr. Sekar shed light on the global menace of cybercrime, which impacts individuals, businesses, and governments alike.
He highlighted some of the most pressing cyber threats today, including phishing (deceptive emails designed to steal sensitive information), vishing (manipulative voice calls), smishing (fraudulent SMS messages), baiting (infected USB drives spreading malware), cyber grooming (exploitation via video calls), cyber stalking (tracking under false pretenses), cyber kidnapping (coercing victims into harmful situations), doxxing (unauthorized sharing of personal information), pharming (redirecting users to fake websites), sexting (sharing explicit content), deepfake (manipulating media to alter identities), and digital arrest (unauthorized online surveillance or restrictions).
To combat these challenges, Fr. Sekar recommended strategies for enhancing cyber wellness, including installing the latest operating systems to protect against vulnerabilities, staying informed and proactive about digital safety (being "cyber-genetic"), and exercising caution by avoiding suspicious links or unknown attachments.
He also warned against "Brain Rot," a phenomenon caused by the overconsumption of low-quality digital content, which can harm cognitive abilities and mental health.
Finally, he called on participants to become "Google Samaritans," safeguarding themselves and others in the digital world.
Fr. Victor Vijai Lobo, Secretary and Treasurer of Signis India, welcomed participants and encouraged them to deepen their understanding of cyber security.
Fr. David Arockiam, Secretary of SIGNIS India and CEO of Madha Television, coordinated the webinar.
Reflecting on the event, he said, "In an age where the Digital Highway connects people across the globe, it is crucial to recognize the challenges and threats that come with this vast interconnected network."
Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.” Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
