As his tenure comes to a close, Myanmar Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, outgoing president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), celebrated the milestones achieved during his six-year leadership.

Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the leadership of his successor, Indian Cardinal Felipe Neri Ferrão, to guide FABC into a new chapter of growth and bold initiatives.

Myanmar Cardinal Charles Maung Bo said he is “filled with profound gratitude and humility” for the varied successes of the FABC, which he said have “forged a legacy.”

“Through our collective efforts, we have made significant strides in fulfilling our mission,” he said.

“Our journey together has been one of profound growth, learning, and shared commitment to the Christian values that unite us,” said further said.

Cardinal Bo also highlighted how the ongoing Synodal journey has been one of the greatest achievements of the FABC, where they engaged “in meaningful conversations that have led to concrete actions in many areas.”

“[It has] not only strengthened the bonds within FABC but has also allowed us to discern more clearly our shared vision and purpose,” he pointed out.

After six years as head of the FABC, Cardinal Bo will be succeeded by Indian Cardinal Felipe Neri Ferrão in January 2025.

The outgoing president commended his successor’s “intellectual prowess, social acumen, and prophetic leadership qualities.”

“His ability to make judicious and calculated decisions, coupled with his profound faith and Christocentric vision holds great promise for our future,” said Cardinal Bo.

He also highlighted how Cardinal Ferrão’s capacity for “taking bold yet thoughtful risks” will usher in a new era and progress for the FABC and the entire Asian continent.

Assuming their posts in January alongside the new president is Filipino Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David as the new vice president, and Japanese Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi who was reelected for a second term as secretary-general.
