New Apostolic Prefect Appointed
Pope Francis appointed Father Pierre Suon Hangly as Apostolic Prefect of Kampong Cham in Cambodia, July 15.
The 51-years-old Hangly is a Cambodian priest ordained in 2001. He is currently in charge of Phnom Penh Thmey Pastoral District in the Phnom Penh capital. He has a Master’s degree in Theology from the Catholic Institute of Paris.
Hangly worked closely with the Apostolic Vicar of Phnom Penh, Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler at the Kampot-Takeo Pastoral District. He served as the Vicar General of Phnom Penh Vicariate and as Rector of St. Jean Marie Vianéy Seminary.
Kampong Cham Prefecture covers eight provinces: Kampong Cham, Prey Veng, Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondulkiri, Ratanakkiri, Tbong Khmum and Svay Rieng.
Bishop Olivier congratulated the new Apostolic Prefect and thanked him for his years of service and close collaboration. “We will miss you, dear Monsignor, but be sure of our prayers for your new mission in Kampong Cham,” said Bishop Olivier.
