Indian priest-led theater troupe marks its 30th anniversary

An Indian social activist and priest-led theatre troupe celebrated its 30th anniversary on July 31 based in Varanasi, the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The 30th year of uninterrupted performance in Lamhi, Varanasi, by Prerna Kala Manch, the theatre wing of Vishwa Jyoti Communications, on July 31.

"The theme this year was conversion based on the short story "Mantra" (principle) written by Munshi Premchand in 1927," said Fr. Anand Mathew, a member of the Indian Mission Society (IMS).

The theme is relevant today when falsehoods are spreading about forced conversion in India. The play gave meaning to religion: love and service," he said.

The Prerna Kala Manch (Inspirational Art Forum) campaigns to make creative interventions towards promoting human rights, primary education, communal harmony, community building, and health, developing the fullness of life, cultural development, and people’s organization.

It is an art movement against the onslaught of liberalization, globalization, privatization, communalism, fascism, corruption, injustice, caste-class divisions, child labor, gender discrimination, and women's exploitation.

At the request of Father Anil Dev IMS, the creator of Vishwa Jyoti Communications, Moti Lal Gupta directed a dramatic adaptation of "Raja Ka Baja" titled "Kaun Hai Zimmedar." It debuted on December 25, 1993.

According to data, Prerana Kala Manch has performed 9210 shows of stage plays and street plays on diverse subjects from 1993 to 2020.
