The Indian Church, in collaboration with the Arachudar Social Service Society, celebrated the Pongal Harvest Festival in Tamil Nadu, south India on January 14, 2025.
Up to 130 municipal workers received honors for their contributions to society during the event.
Organisers distributed rice, sarees and gifts to the workers as a token of appreciation.
The event also paid tribute to Edumond Florentine for his contributions to uplifting oppressed children.
Oulgaret Commune organized various activities, including games for both boys and girls, to celebrate the festival and emphasize the significance of the harvest season.
Retired Superintendent of Police, Shanmuga Sundaram, acknowledged the significance of government workers and emphasized that such programs encourage active participation and dedication in their roles.
Sr. Dr. S. Susila Mary, a member of Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga (FSAG), recognized the hard work of municipal sweepers and noted their vital role in maintaining clean and safe environments.
She stressed the importance of appreciating their dignity and breaking societal barriers rooted in caste.
Pavadai Rayan, head of the Dr. Ambedkar Committee, highlighted the need to honor individuals for their service and patriotism.
Salethaiyan, head of the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), called for gender justice and equal pay for all workers.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Anandavelu described municipal workers as "angels without wings," praising their tireless efforts in keeping cities clean.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Alhagar, added that such recognition inspires youth and children to value and respect these workers, fostering patriotism and social responsibility.
The event also featured cultural and awareness programs, bringing joy to the audience and promoting community involvement. The people of Oulgaret contributed significantly, ensuring the success of the celebration.
