India: Green Umbrella Drive in Hyderabad Archdiocese
Hyderabad Archdiocese Social Service Society (HASSS) has initiated Green Umbrella Drive in the Archdiocese of Hyderabad taking the call of Holy Father Pope Francis: “Earth is an Environment to be Safeguarded, a garden to be cultivated.”
Green Umbrella Drive was organized by HASSS in St Mary’s High School Secunderabad on July 25 to promote Government Initiative of Haritha Haram to increase the green cover of the State.
HASSS director Father Madanu Anthony, Msgr. Y. Bala Showry, Fr. Victor Emmanuel, Fr. Inniah, Fr. Allam Arogyam were present.
Inaugurating the program, Cardinal-designate Archbishop Anthony Poola said, destroying nature will in turn destroy us; it is our duty to plant trees and go green and glow earth to hand on the legacy of greenery to the coming generations as we have received from previous generations”.
Nearly 30 schools and 20 parishes in the archdiocese have received 50 plants each and organic vegetable seeds to promote model organic kitchen gardens in schools and parishes to keep away from deadly cancer.
Haritha Haram program was launched by Telangana state Chief Minister Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao in 2015. It is aimed at rejuvenating degraded forests and protecting forests from smuggling, encroachment, fire and grazing.
Massive planting activities were taken up in areas such as road-side avenues, river and canal banks, barren hills and foreshore areas, institutional premises, religious places, housing colonies, community lands, municipalities and industrial parks.
