India: Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão pays tribute to former Indian PM Dr. Manmohan Singh

Dr Manmohan Singh is a former Prime Minister of India and a renowned economist and statesman.

Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences on the demise of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India and an acclaimed economist and statesman.

Remembering Dr. Singh as a leader of unparalleled vision and humility, Ferrão paid tribute to his exceptional contributions to the nation.

"Dr. Singh was a man of extraordinary intellect, integrity, and humility. His visionary leadership transformed India in profound ways," the cardinal remarked.

Reflecting on Singh's tenure as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, Ferrão highlighted his pivotal role in ushering groundbreaking economic reforms. "As Prime Minister, he fostered stability and inclusive growth, positioning India as a global force. He will forever be remembered for his quiet yet firm resolve and the wisdom with which he tackled the nation’s challenges."

The cardinal also noted Dr. Singh’s compassion and dedication to the common good, stating, "Beyond his notable achievements in public service, his deep commitment to the welfare of every citizen set him apart as a leader who always prioritized the common good. His life and legacy will continue to inspire future generations to work for justice, peace, and progress."

Offering prayers and solidarity to the bereaved family and the nation, Ferrão said, "May the Lord grant him eternal rest and reward him for his tireless service to humanity. His legacy will live on as a guiding light for India and beyond."

Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92, due to age-related health conditions at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

Known for his intellect and integrity, Singh also held other prominent roles, including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Finance Minister, where he played a crucial role in steering India’s economic liberalization.
