India: Bethany Convent Sisters organize mental health and displaced people's rights conference

The Sparsh Health Centre and Bethany Convent conducted a conference to empower the mental Health and Human Rights of displaced people in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur who were affected by ongoing conflict and violence.

The event took place at Bethany Convent in Saleempur Majra, North Delhi, Burari on  August 3.

More than a hundred internally displaced individuals from Manipur, along with ten sisters from Bethany Provincial and five priests from various congregations, attended the event.

In the aftermath of the Mental Health Empowerment and Human Rights Conference, several priests and sisters from Bethany Province led an adoration, confession, and prayer for peace and harmony in Manipur.

Sister Preeti Margret, Superior of Bethany Convent, stated, "We want to show solidarity with the suffering people of Manipur, especially those displaced present today at this event, and we also pray for you and eternal peace for those who were killed in the brutal violence."

She also said, "This event is conducted to show we are always with you all in your thick and thin life situations and will continue to support and pray continually."

"With support from donors, churches, and well-wishers, the team is still able to help displaced people here through all possible means by distributing rations and aid in a variety of ways to more than 1000 people all over the country till today," Sister Margret told RVA News.

"We are very happy and grateful for Preeti Margret and her team's continuous support and are truly grateful for their unfailing support during this difficult time," a participant said.

Following the program, the sisters distributed rations and various relief materials to all the displaced participants, followed by a delicious meal.

Since May 3, riots have erupted between hill-dwelling Kukis and Imphal Valley's majority Meiteis.

More than 160 people were killed, 340 churches, schools, and residences were devastated, and more than sixty thousand people are currently residing in relief camps across the Indian states and the country. - RVA Zo News Service
