India: Archdiocese of Imphal celebrates inauguration of Pallium for Archbishop Linus Nelli
The Archdiocese of Imphal experienced a joyous occasion on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, with the inauguration of the Pallium for Metropolitan Archbishop Dr. Linus Nelli.
The ceremony was presided over by His Grace Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, the Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal.
Held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the solemn event saw the participation of over 74 priests, 50 nuns, and hundreds of Catholic faithful from across the Archdiocese of Imphal.
Due to ongoing ethnic violence, the Kuki-Zo priests, nuns, and faithful were unable to attend. Representing the Kuki-Zo community, Father Lourdhusamy, the Pastoral Coordinator for the parishes of Churachandpur, Thanlon, Tuaitengphai, Tuibuang, Singngat, and Lungthulien, presented a traditional Zou shawl to Archbishop Girelli and extended an invitation for Archbishop Nelli to celebrate Mass in the Churachandpur district.
In his congratulatory message, Archbishop Girelli highlighted the unity and diversity within the Church, quoting Pope Francis on synodality: "The Church is a people of God. Synodality is to find peace and unity among us. The Church has a lot of diversity, different cultures, languages, and rites, enriching it." He also conveyed Pope Francis's close connection to India and his willingness to visit the country.
Emeritus Archbishop Dominic Lumon congratulated Archbishop Nelli on receiving the Pallium and expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for granting administrative powers to the new Archbishop.
Dr. Mathew Kamei, President of the All Manipur Catholic Union, praised Archbishop Nelli's leadership, mentioning the significant financial aid provided for internally displaced persons under his guidance.
Chancellor and Bishop Delegate Fr. Dr. Jacob also appreciated the Nuncio’s leadership and reaffirmed their allegiance, presenting a traditional shawl alongside lay leaders.
The Pallium, a ceremonial garment worn by the Pope and Metropolitan Archbishops, symbolizes shepherding, unity, authority, humility, and connection with Christ.
