Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal John Tong Hon, Bishop Emeritus of Hong Kong, as his special envoy to the Fifth National Eucharistic Congress in Taiwan.

The significant event, hosted by the Diocese of Kaohsiung, is scheduled for October 5, 2024.

Cardinal Hon, who is 85 years old, will preside over the Concluding Mass at the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center. He has a distinguished history of service, including his role as President Delegate of the 13th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in 2012 and participation in the 3rd Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in 2014.

The theme for this year’s Eucharistic Congress, “Fraternity Heals All,” echoes the theme of the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress, “Fraternity Heals The World,” which is set to take place in Ecuador from September 8 to 15.

Taiwan’s Eucharistic Congress will be the highlight of the country’s Diocesan Year of the Eucharist, a year-long celebration that began last year and will conclude in November.

As part of the Eucharistic Year, four pilgrimage churches have been designated to grant plenary indulgences, including the Holy Rosary Cathedral in Kaohsiung City.
