Empowering through inclusion: NEISSR's event in India highlights disability advocacy
The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), in collaboration with the All India Malayalee Association (AIIMA), hosted an impactful event themed “Inclusive India,” dedicated to promoting social inclusion and empowerment for people with disabilities.
The event took place on November 2, 2024, at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall, Peace Centre, featuring an engaging magic show by the renowned magician and motivational speaker Gopinath Muthukad.
His performance delivered an inspiring message of inclusivity and motivated attendees with stories of resilience and hope.
La. Ganesan, the Governor of Nagaland, graced the occasion as the chief guest, while Ms. Diethono Nakhro, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, attended as the special guest. Their presence underscored the significance of fostering an inclusive society that offers equal opportunities for all.
In his address, Governor Ganesan emphasized the pivotal role of inclusivity in shaping a diverse and empowered nation. He reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting initiatives that advocate for equal opportunities and acknowledged the invaluable contributions of people with disabilities to national growth and unity.
Ms. Nakhro’s speech resonated deeply with the audience as she shared insights from her own journey. She stressed that an inclusive India is not merely an aspirational goal but a necessary reality that requires collective effort.
Her remarks reinforced the importance of challenging societal mindsets, removing barriers, and nurturing a community that celebrates diversity and accessibility.
Gopinath Muthukad captivated attendees with his unique fusion of magic and motivational storytelling. He recounted the founding of “Magic Planet,” the world’s first magic academy for people with disabilities, located in Kerala.
Through this initiative, Muthukad has worked tirelessly to uplift and empower individuals with disabilities, demonstrating that creativity and determination can transform lives.
NEISSR, established in 2014 and based in Dimapur, Nagaland, offers degree courses in humanities and social sciences.
It is managed by the Catholic Archdiocese of Kohima, reflecting its commitment to promoting education and social development in the region.
