India: Nine Days of Mourning for Pope Francis in Madurai Archdiocese

Bishop Antonysamy Savarimuthu of Madurai announces Pope Francis's death and a nine-day mourning period through a circular on April 21, 2025.

With deep sorrow, the Archdiocese of Madurai in Tamil Nadu announced the passing of Pope Francis, the Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, on April 21.

In an official statement, Archbishiop Antonysamy Savarimuthu, Apostolic Administrator of the archdiocese, expressed profound grief and invited all clergy, religious, and lay faithful to join in prayer and mourning.

Francis faithfully served the Church with humility, wisdom, and compassion. He was a shepherd who reflected the spirit of Christ, especially through his care for the poor, his message of peace, and his desire for unity in a divided world.

As a mark of respect and mourning, the Archdiocese has announced the following directives:

  • Church bells are to toll for five minutes today in all parishes and religious houses.

  • A Requiem Mass will be celebrated in every parish and religious institution within the next three days.

  • A period of nine days of mourning and subdued celebrations will be observed.

  • A Holy Hour or Prayer Vigil with Eucharistic Adoration will be held in all parishes.

  • The Vatican flag will be flown at half-mast in churches and institutions.

  • Catechesis and reflections will be offered to help the faithful understand and appreciate the legacy of Pope Francis.

  • During this time of Sede Vacante, liturgical prayers will be adjusted accordingly.

The faithful are encouraged to pray for the repose of Francis' soul and for the College of Cardinals as they prepare to elect his successor.

Antonysamy said, “Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.”
