Embody compassionate hearts as Catholic communicators—Indian Cardinal

Fillipe Cardinal Neri, Cardinal of Goa and Daman, urged Catholic media workers to communicate with compassion at the SIGNIS Indian National Assembly.

St. Teresa of Kolkotta's compassion and forgiveness, as well as Jesus' conversations with Samaritan women and Zacheus, inspired the cardinal. The cardinal said Jesus speaks from the heart rather than his intellect in both instances, which makes it different.

“So as communicators, everyone should speak the truth with heart,” the cardinal said at the SIGNIS National Assembly, which was held at the St. Joseph Vaz Spiritual Renewal Centre in Goa from December 7 to 9.

His Eminence Fillipe Cardinal Neri, the Cardinal of Goa and Daman, and the Most Reverend Henry D'Souza, the Chairman of CBCI for the Offices of Social Communications, presided over the inaugural mass.

The assemblage will be centered around the theme "Speaking with the Heart: The Truth in Love." 86 Catholic media personnel from across the nation were in attendance.

SIGNIS honored excellent communicators. Mr. Shesan Ouseph, Director of ‘Face of the Faceless’, Mrs. Sandra, Producer, and Bp. Henry D’Souza, Former SIGNIS India President.

Cardinal D’Souza urged all Catholic communicators to assume the role of missionaries in the digital era during his inaugural address. In the digital age, missionaries cannot function without knowledge of it.

"Therefore, we must approach the communication ministry with a compassionate heart as it pertains to the Gospel," the cardinal said.

Fr. Stany Kozhichira, President of SIGNIS Asia, welcomed the attendees to engage in their communication activities and urged them to be enthusiastic about the new era during his keynote address.

“The focal point is the effort that I made to take this communication ministry into the new era. What we need today is not gadgets but passion to spread the gospel message. He also drew all our attention to the death of truth on the social media platform. Thus, it urged us to create a mature body of Christ, “ said Fr. Kozhichira.

SIGNIS is an association of Catholic communicators across the world. SIGNIS WORLD was created in November 2001 in Rome for the merger of two international Catholic Organizations. They are Unda, meaning ‘wave’ in Latin, for Radio and Television, and OCIC, an acronym for ‘Organization Catholique International du Cinema et de l’ Audio-visual, meaning International Catholic Organization for Cinema and Audio-visual’.

The word ‘SIGNIS’ is derived from two Latin words: ‘Signum’ (meaning sign) and ‘Ignis’ (meaning fire).

SIGNIS combines the heritages of both Unda and OCIC and, at the same time, moves forward as a creative and dynamic Catholic International Media Organization.

The assembly is set to conclude on December 9, 2023, unveiling new plans and guidelines for the Digital Communication Ministry.- RVA Hindi News Service

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
