Echoes of Nicaea in Asia: CATS-X Summit celebrates 1700 years of faith and unity

The 10th Asian Theologians’ Summit, organized by the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA) and the Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM), held at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, from October 24 to 29, 2024.

The Christian Conference of Asia (CCA), in collaboration with the Council of Churches of Malaysia (CCM), held the 10th Asian Theologians’ Summit (CATS-X) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 24 to 29, 2024.

The summit commemorated the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea (325 A.D.) at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia.

Under the theme “Echoes of Nicaea: Enduring Faith and Embracing Unity—Asian Ecumenical Response,” the program reflected on the legacy of Nicaea from an Asian theological perspective.

It celebrated the rich traditions and shared witness of faith, focusing on the council's historic role in affirming unity and mutual recognition across diverse Christian traditions.

Participants explored the contemporary relevance of the Nicaean Creed, delving into its enduring impact on faith and ecumenical unity.

Through discussions, theologians deepened their understanding of spiritual heritage, addressed challenges facing the church today, and engaged in dialogues aimed at fostering unity, peace, and harmony among all people and creation.

Since its inception in 1997, CATS has been a platform for Asian theologians—including emerging scholars from across Asia and the Asian diaspora—to contribute innovative theological insights.

This year’s summit brought together theologians from CCA member churches across the region, including Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, and New Zealand.

The summit also welcomed representatives from other Asian ecumenical organizations, including the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), the Association for Theological Education in Southeast Asia (ATESEA), the Senate of Serampore in India, the Asia Evangelical Alliance (AEA), PERSETIA of Indonesia, the Korean Theological Association, the Association for Theological Institutions of Malaysia (ATIM), the Association for Theological Education in Myanmar (ATEM), and the Pacific Theological Association (PTA).

Radio Veritas Asia (RVA), a media platform of the Catholic Church, aims to share Christ. RVA started in 1969 as a continental Catholic radio station to serve Asian countries in their respective local language, thus earning the tag “the Voice of Asian Christianity.”  Responding to the emerging context, RVA embraced media platforms to connect with the global Asian audience via its 21 language websites and various social media platforms.
