Pope entrusts his apostolic journey to Mother Mary
To entrust his apostolic journey to Mother Mary, Pope Francis went to the Roman Basilica of Saint Mary Major on Monday afternoon.
The Holy See Press Office reported that the pope prayed before the ancient icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani (Saint Mary, Health of the Roman People) in the early afternoon.
The ancient icon measures five feet in height and three and a quarter feet in width (117 x 79 cm). It arrived from Crete in 590 AD during the Pontificate of Pope Gregory the Great and was placed in the Roman Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
Pope Francis will depart from Rome on September 13 morning and will arrive in Kazakhstan at about 1:00 PM local time.
This papal visit to the Central Asian country will mark Pope Francis' 38th foreign Apostolic Journey.
During the papal visit, Pope Francis will attend the VII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.
The theme of the Congress is "The Role of Leaders of World and Traditional Faiths in the Socio-Spiritual Development of Humanity after the pandemic."
Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, said, "The Pope's journey will be to promote peace in the world with the help of other religious leaders." - With input from Vatican News
