United Nations Public Service Day
United Nations Public Service Day is celebrated every June 23.
"You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live ampler, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand," - Woodrow Wilson
On June 23, each year, United Nations marks Public Service Day. It celebrates the importance of public service in society and the work of public servants, as well as encourages young people to consider careers in the public sector.
A resolution adopted 57/277 by the United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2002, declared June 23 UN Public Service Day; every year, a host country is chosen for the event.
A variety of events are held to honour the contributions of public officials. Many people participate in the discussion and find new ways of transformation and novel strategies to serve society through public service.
Leaders, government officials, politicians, and international organizations gather on this day to talk about how to make changes, adopt better practices, deal with current issues, and explore creative ideas, among other things.
With inspiration from the United Nations High-level Political Forum (HLPF), which reviews the development of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal, the official commemoration of UN Public Service Day, which is celebrated this year on June 23, will honour the year's theme.
The focus of Covid-19 will be on the role of public institutions and civil servants in meeting the 2030 deadline for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The event will, however, highlight lessons learned from the previous year, including how countries and public workers adjusted and utilized internet tools to continue working during the pandemic.
Many public service organizations and departments around the world celebrate this day by holding various events to recognize the valuable role those public servants play in making improvements in society.
The theme of United Nations Public Service Day in 2022 will be "Innovating the Future Public Service: New Government Models for a New Era."
To acknowledge the work and contribution of the public service in the overall development of the community, to promote the contribution of public service in the community, to motivate individuals to pursue careers in the public sector, and to honour the work and contribution of the public service in the community.
A service that benefits the whole community is a public service.
There are many areas of public service.
1. The public sector
2. Public safety
3. Education
4. Government and diplomacy
5. Nonprofit administration
Volunteering or working in the public sector can be motivated by a variety of factors. Some people work in the public sector to help people and communities.
As an example, a lawyer may provide low-cost or free legal services for the public good, and others may work in government service to get useful job experience or to mentor others.
Thus, the United Nations established the United Nations Public Service Awards to recognize the contributions public servants make to their communities.
Award winners are grouped into five regional categories to recognize innovation and excellence in public service.
More than 250 initiatives have been recognized in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Western Asia.
A variety of projects are involved, ranging from gender equality to improved health services.
There are a few ways to promote United Nations Public Service Day.
In honour of this day of public service, we would like to thank the public sector for providing us with exceptional talent.
Take a moment to consider how life would be different if public service workers no longer served in your community.
