Early Life and Education
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the eldest of five children in a family of Italian immigrants. Before entering the priesthood, he earned a diploma in chemistry and worked as a chemical technician and even a nightclub bouncer.
However, his deep faith led him to join the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1958, where he studied humanities, philosophy, and theology. He was ordained a Jesuit priest on December 13, 1969.
Religious Career
