Full Name: Jorge Mario Bergoglio

Date of Birth: December 17, 1936

Place of Birth: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Papacy: March 13, 2013 – Apr 21, 2025

Early Life and Education

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was the eldest of five children in a family of Italian immigrants. Before entering the priesthood, he earned a diploma in chemistry and worked as a chemical technician and even a nightclub bouncer.

However, his deep faith led him to join the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1958, where he studied humanities, philosophy, and theology. He was ordained a Jesuit priest on December 13, 1969.

Religious Career

Fr. Bergoglio quickly emerged as a humble yet influential leader. In 1973, he became Provincial Superior of the Jesuits in Argentina, guiding the community during a period of military dictatorship. Known for his simple lifestyle, he often used public transportation and lived in modest accommodations.

His leadership continued to grow when Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992, and later, Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. As Archbishop, he dedicated himself to social justice, championing the rights of the poor and marginalized.

In 2001, he was elevated to Cardinal, expanding his influence within the global Church.

Papacy: A Historic Election

On March 13, 2013, Cardinal Bergoglio was elected as the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, choosing the name Francis—a tribute to St. Francis of Assisi, the saint of humility and care for the poor. His election was historic for several reasons:

  1. First Pope from the Americas – Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio) is the first pope from the Americas (Argentina) and the first from the Southern Hemisphere.

  2. First Jesuit Pope – He is the first member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) to be elected pope.

  3. First Pope Francis – No other pope had chosen the name Francis before, which he selected in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, known for humility, simplicity, and care for the poor.

  4. Election After a Rare Resignation – His election followed the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, the first papal resignation in nearly 600 years, making the transition especially historic.

  5. A New Pastoral Approach – His leadership style emphasized mercy, inclusivity, and reform, marking a significant shift in the papacy.

Because of these unprecedented factors, many historians and Church observers refer to his election as a historic papacy.
